12 Thousand vs 30 Million in Northumberland County

Last week a former department was charged with corruption in Northumberland County. The PA AG office did the investigation after being referred the case by the District Attorney through the Controller's Office.

All this to uncover 12K.

I wonder where 30 million went?

Godspeed Governor

Lt. Governor Catherine Baker Knoll is scheduled to be laid to rest today in Pittsburgh. I had the privilege of meeting the Lieutenant Governor three years ago for the American Cancer Society's Daffodil Days.

"Take those visitors tags off" said the governor. "You are my guests today." She made time to talk to our group and let us know how important our work was as citizens. Recently, a member of the Central Susquehanna Valley Colon Cancer Task Force sent her a get-well wish and it was answered in a hand written note.

From David's Blog
, here is a quote of Knoll on her life:

“The leaves of my life keep falling one at a time. When you rake them into
a pile of memories a couple of lessons become evident. One is that if we get
wrapped up in ourself, we’ll become a very small package. The other is that
making a living involves what we GET – building a life involves what we GIVE.
Now more than ever we should recognize that life is precious – that it is a
once-in-a-lifetime experience – and it is your job and mine to encourage all of
our citizens not to undervalue what they are.”

Remembering James P. Kelley

Last week former Northumberland County Commissioner, James P. Kelley, was laid to rest. Probably the best tribute to him was this letter to the editor as Kelley was taking office for his first term in 1971.

Mr. Kelley's style and compassion for the office will greatly be missed.

Hillary Clinton coming to Schuylkill County?????

Two different media outlets have reported that Hillary Clinton may be in Girardville, PA for the annual St. Patrick's Day parade. Read the reports here and here. It will be the first time a candidate ventures inside the Williamsport-Scranton-Harrisburg triangle. Former President William Jefferson Clinton has scheduled stops in State College and Lewistown this week.

It is hard to get a take on the reasons for the surge in voter registrations, especially counting all the party switches. Read Gort42's take on it.

The Pig that saved the Pittsburgh Penguins

In the 1979, The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh, star player Moses Guthrie was born under the sign of Pisces. The fictional Pythons decide to hire the rest of the players born under the sign of the fish. They even eventually change their name to the Pisces.

Over a quarter century later, another animal is coming to save a struggling Pittsburgh franchise. Governor Ed Rendell is dishing up a serving of pork in order to save the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins. The money is supposedly coming from gambling revenues to pay for the bond issue. So much for property tax reform.

Maybe they could name the new arena The Sty. For additional revenue, maybe they could broker a split with Warner Brothers to put Porkey Pig on the uniform.
